Varavon Power Pack
A well known fact about the Sony A7 Series is that the battery does not last that long. I personally used the Sony A7R for a year plus doing still photography and time lapse images. And I always carry around 3 to 4 batteries with me. This was more than enough for a days shoot for me.
The batteries from sony was good enough for photography but since I am also doing more videos with the Sony A7RII, the battery just drains way too fast. And its unprofessional and irritating to keep changing batteries during a film set shoot. So I had to look for alternatives.
I visited Varavon’s website and I wanted to order the battery pack only. Since I already owned a dummy battery for the A7R.
When I was looking for the VARAVON POWER PACK 7.4V/12V, it was US$150 and so happen the A7S BATTERY PACKAGE was on sale for Black Friday at US$110. Original price was US$190. So quickly I ordered a set with the BATTERY CLAMP @ US$35.
As usual Varavon delivers very fast and very well packed.
Items Included in the box:
- On/Off button
- Battery Check
- Voltage Option 7.5v or 12v
- Capacity 5,200 mAh
How to get it working.
Switch on the battery pack by pressing the CHECK button for about 5 sec. The voltage indicator will go on. Make sure it is at 7.5V. To change the voltage just press the SELECT button for 5 seconds to change it. To check the battery life just press the CHECK button and the indicator will light up. Once all good just plug the wire into the camera and the battery pack and your done.
Important note: The battery indicator on the camera is not the actual percentage of the battery. I have tried and tested and even if the camera battery indicator shows empty, it will still work as long as the battery pack still has juice.
Overall I’m very happy with the Varavon Battery Pack. It is slim, light, easy to use and best of all I don’t have to worry about my battery dying during a shoot. But I will still carry some batteries in my bag just in case 😀
Some people may recall I did a DIY battery pack using my old RC battery pack and posted it in my blog before. Well sadly all my old blogs and website was deleted accidentally by me. 🙁 The RC Battery setup still works well but it is heavy and bulky. Also it had no indication on the battery power left. That RC Battery was only 4600mAh and lasted bout 9 hours during a continuous time lapse test below.
