Varavon Zeus Cage
After getting my Sony A7R MKII, I needed a cage so I can build up my video setup. I ordered the Varavon Zeus Cage for Sony A7II Series. Here is what I thought of the new Cage from Varavon.
It was delivered rather fast and I was very pleased with the packaging. It was nicely boxed up individually and everything I ordered came. To my surprise there were 2 spare top screws with allen key head for the handle. Which was a nice add on.
Everything worked and fitted really well and snug. There are holes everywhere for attachments. Magic arms, monitors, microphones, LED lights and so much ore. Its all up to your imagination. No complaints except 3 thing.
Firstly no matter how tight you attach the handle to the cage, there will be very very slight free play. Its not going to move or get loose at all. Just a little free play. I have use it with a large setup and I had no issue with the handle moving. Just a slight wiggle. It works very well with all the accessories attached.
Secondly is I tried something which I know the cage was not made for. I had a photography event to shoot and I had no protection for my new camera. So I thought of just using this cage. The cage is so light so there was no issue on adding weight. Further more it looks cool. Only thing was, with long hours of gripping the wooden handle it started to numb my finger tips. The wooden grip where your fingers rest was at an angle and the prolong gripping was not helping. I could easily solve that issue by doing some work on the wooden handle but decided to just leave it and use the L-Plate bracket for photography. Maybe the numbness is due to my old age. 😀
Finally, there was a slight issue for pressing the lens release button. Don’t get me wrong, it can be done but you need to find your way in with your fingers. And if your using a large lens like 1635 f4 or if you got large fingers, its gonna be tough to press the release button.
Was I disappointed with the purchase? Not at all. It is everything I hoped for and the 2 red and black wire holders were fantastic. Recommending this cage to Sony A7 Mk II users… I would.
Side note: It will NOT fit the a7 Series at all. Fits only the MkII’s
